On Friday, Mining books are presented to Historical Society by George Edwards

Monday, May 17th, 2010

George Edwards, who was the fourth-generation miner, has presented 100-year-old mining books to the Historical Society of Schuylkill County. This book teaches about the mining art and mining techniques which were been practiced in Wales and other parts of the United Kingdom. This book consists of Six-volume set. First volume talks about the geology of coal and the other parts of it. He also added, in olden day there were no community colleges to teach about mining. In South Wales, there was only one school which teaches about mining.

Also, Edwards sentenced that most of the miners who were leading mining companies in Schuylkill County were came from the surroundings of United Kingdom. He also said the reason for presenting these books. That is, since he moved to Canada and working in the aerospace field, he found these books were just filled the shelf but none of his family members were using it. So he went in search for a good shelter for these mining books. At last, he found Historical Society is the best place. And he felt that these books will be useful to many people if it is in Historical Society. So he and his wife Anne came together and presented it to the society on Saturday and dedicated them to his father, John Edwards and Anne’s father, Tom James.

Dr. Peter Yasenchak, who is the Executive Director of Historical Society said he was very to accept that gift.
