Company Description

Pike River Coal Ltd is a mining company listed on the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges. The company owns the rights to a premium hard coking coal resource in the South Island of New Zealand.

Pike River Coal Mining Company was an underground coal mining company based in Greymouth, New Zealand. It was established in 1989 and operated a coal mine at Pike River, located 40 kilometres northeast of Greymouth. The company was listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange and was owned by a consortium of New Zealand and Australian investors.

The company was the largest employer in the Greymouth region, employing over 200 people. The mine was the first underground coal mine in New Zealand and was one of the largest in the country. The company mined coal for export to markets in Asia and Europe.

On 19 November 2010, a methane gas explosion occurred at the mine, killing 29 miners and contractors. This was the worst mining disaster in New Zealand since 1914. The cause of the explosion was never determined.

Following the disaster, Pike River Coal Mining Company was placed into receivership. The receivership was extended in 2012, and the company was finally placed into liquidation in 2013.

The impact of the disaster was felt throughout the Greymouth region. The loss of life and the economic impact of the closure of the mine had a profound effect on the local community. The disaster also had a significant impact on the New Zealand mining industry, leading to a review of safety regulations and the introduction of new safety measures.

The Pike River Coal Mining Company disaster is remembered as one of the darkest days in New Zealand's history. The families of the victims have campaigned for justice and closure since the disaster, and the government has committed to a new inquiry into the disaster. The tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of safety in the mining industry and the need for robust safety regulations.
