THE Federal Government has agreed the Four Mile uranium mine in South Australia.
The approval was not easy decision, said Peter Garrett the Minister of Federal Environment.
I have not taken this decision evenly, this mine was subject to a complete, systematically tough and transparent assessment procedure, Mr. Garrett said.
Following this comprehensive assessment and careful consideration, I am assured this operation causes no credible risk to the environment.
Quasar Resources hold 75% of the Four Mile project, among Alliance Resources holding a 25% stake in the mine, near the obtainable Beverley uranium mine in South Australia’s north.
Garrett said the Four Mine proposal was subject of two independent appraisals.
Both appraisals accomplished the mining operation could go ahead without any considerable lasting impact on the known environmental values of the area and that the proposal symbolizes world best practice in uranium mining, he said.
The minister said the mine's holder would have to show environmental outcomes were being met under a stringent monitoring regime.
These strict monitoring requirements will remain in place well after the mine ceases its operation in order to make sure the long term protection of the environment, he said.
