Definition

Erbium is a chemical constituent with the symbol Er and atomic number 68. A rare, silvery, white metallic lanthanide, erbium is solid in its usual state. It is a rare earth element connected with several other rare elements in the mineral gadolinite from Ytterby in Sweden.

Application

It is used in nuclear technology as a nuclear poison, as in neutron-absorbing manage rods.
