Michigan mine
Approximately 29 thousand troy ounces (900 kg) of gold were produced from the Ropes gold mine northeast of Ishpeming in Marquette County, Michigan. The underground mine, originally operated from 1880 to 1897, and reopened from 1983–1989, extracted gold from quartz veins in peridotite.Michigan might not be the first state that comes up when talking about panning for gold, but this Great Lakes state definitely has deposits of ore. Gold was first discovered in 1845 in the state’s Upper Peninsula; since then, placer deposits of glacial-borne gold have been found in rivers and waterways throughout the state.
